3393 (or 5593) Private A R Ablett, Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. He volunteered for service with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War, joining the regiment about the time it was raised at Pietermaritzburg by Major A W Thorneycroft of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. By the middle of Nov 1899 the Corps had reached a strength of 500. Their first engagement was outside Mooi River on 22 Nov 1899 and they fought at the Battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, at Spion Kop on 23/24 Jan 1900 (41 killed). Private Ablett was one of those killed in the action at Spion Kop, some 6 miles east of Acton Homes, aged 29 years. He was buried on the battlefield.
