Ansel was the son of Charles Bailey and Margaret Riddle, and a grandson of pioneers Ansel and Elizabeth Bradley Bailey. His mother, Margaret, was the daughter of John W. Riddle. Although he was born on Lower Browns Creek in what was then Burke County, his parents moved to Bailey Hill when he was just a teenager.

About 1848, Ansel married Sarah 'Sallie' Honeycutt, the daughter of the Rev. Elisha Honeycutt and his first wife, Cecelia Hampton. There is some evidence that Ansel and Sarah first lived on the lower part of Bailey Branch and may have swapped houses with his Honeycutt father-in-law.

Ansel, age 37, and Sarah Bailey, 27, appear in the 1860 Yancey Co., N.C. with children Margaret A., 10; Bachus A., 8; Henry C., 6; Phinetta J., 5; Elisha,3; and James H., 1 (William, Nancy and Mary Etta were born by 1870.)

Ansel enlisted 29 June 1864 as a Pvt. in the Confederate Army in Company G, 29th Infantry Regiment North Carolina. He survived the war, but died in 1869 at the age of 48.

The Glen Bailey family have been long time owners of the land where Bailey Cemetery is located, and some of the first known burials were Celia and Susan Hampton, Uriah, Rev. Elisha and Celia Honeycutt, and Charles Bailey.
