Rata, often known as "Johnny", was a nurse, and spent all of her working life in Parkersburg, WV. She grew up in Braxton County, West Virginia, on her parents' farm near Middle Run, and attended public schools in that county. She then received training as a nurse at Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where she lived for the rest of her life.

After working as the nurse for a Parkersburg doctor, she was the factory nurse at the American Viscose plant in Parkersburg. As the oldest child, she assisted her six younger siblings in their careers. She and her husband had no children. Bio by Ronald Decker, her nephew, who remembers frequent visits to her and Albert's house at 1008 14th Street in Parkersburg.
