Mrs. Masten died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community, Lawrence.
She was born June 3, 1918, in Stafford, the daughter of Edward and Hulda Knoche Gerdes. She graduated from Stafford High in 1936 before attending Hutchinson Junior College. She lived in Stafford for most of her life before recently moving to Lawrence. She was a bookkeeper for King Oil Co. and Dr. O.W. Longwood, as well as a housemother for Sigma Nu fraternity at Kansas University.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, a 50-year member of Vasti Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, all of Stafford; and Sigma Nu Mother's Club, University Women, Flying Jayhawks, KU Alumni Association, all of Lawrence. She also served as a docent at KU's Spencer Museum of Art.
She married Boyd Emerson Masten on May 21, 1939, in Stafford. He died April 7, 1964.
Survivors include a son, Boyd Edward Masten, New York City; two daughters, Elaine Brockmeier, Belton, Mo., and Marceline Masten, Lawrence; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren
