By the 15th of August Fahnestock had about 100 recruits and he led the Timber Township company into Peoria, Illinois, where they went into camp at what was then called Camp Lyons, near what is today Glen Oak Park. Fahnestock was elected by the men of the Timber Township/Lancaster, Illinois company to be their Captain and on August 27, 1862, Fahnestock, and 96 of the other Timber Township volunteers, including now Privates Stephen P. Kelly and John Bown, were mustered in as Company I of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
The men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out of Camp Lyon on September 7, 1862, with much fanfare, through the streets of Peoria down to the railroad depot, where they boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Three weeks later the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Colonel Daniel McCook's Brigade chasing Confederate troops. On October 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those Confederate troops during the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the next few years.
After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederate troops withdrew from the State of Kentucky, while the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they went into winter camp. During the winter and early spring of 1862/63, the poor diet and poor living conditions took a terrible toll on the green troops in Nashville. Private Stephen P. Kelley is one of those that is known to have been having great difficulty with his health during this time.
Whatever his ailment, Stephen continued to struggle with his health on into the spring of 1863. Finally in May, the army doctors made the decision that it would be best to discharge Stephen in hopes that with the help of family and some home cooking he could recover from his ailment. So, on May 7, 1863, Private Stephen Parker Kelly was discharged from the service, most likely from an army hospital in Nashville, and sent home. By the end of May, Stephen was most likely back home with his family in Central Illinois.
Once back home, with the help of family and that home cooking, Stephen Parker Kelly apparently did regain his health, However, before the year was over, Eliza (Bown) Kelly is believed to have contracted Typhoid Fever. Eliza (Bown) Kelly is known to have died on December 11, 1863 in Fulton County, Illinois.

Stephen P. Kelly was married 2nd to Mrs. Jane (Bown) Sellick on April 22, 1866 in Fulton County, Illinois. Jane was the sister of Eliza Bown, Stephen's first wife. Jane was married first to Ezra Sellick, who was also a member of Co. I of the 86th Illinois, along with Stephen. Ezra died in the service in 1863, leaving Jane with two young sons. They were Walter Sellick, who was born c. 1856/57, and ____________, who was born in _______.
At the time of the 1870 census, Stephen and Jane and their family are found ____________ County, Illinois;
Stephen Kelly M 43 New York

Eda Kelly M 2 Illinois
Lorenzo Kelly M 10 Illinois
