Martin Shoup was born in Germany in 1842 in a small village near Cochem in the Mosel River Valley, Germany. It is a beautiful wine growing region where some Shoups still have vineyards. He married Mary Holland August 3, 1865 and their children included Margaret Shoup, mother of Ruth Van Patten Peck. His parents were Peter Shoup born about 1809, d. April 13, 1895 and Margaret Maas Shoup b. Sept 7, 1805, d. Jan 12, 1887, who immigrated at the same time in May of 1851. In the censuses, his name is sometimes spelled Supe or Soup! They all show up as Shoups in the 1880 census. In Germany their name was spelled Schupp. He had a cousin, Martin Shoup, who changed his name to Shoop to avoid confusion with mail. Now there are also many Shoops in Gloversville and beyond.
