follows:

Gho1ston, James S.- enlisted Captain July 11, 1861. Elected Major February 1,
1862; Lieutenant Colonel August 16, 1864. Retired to Invalid Corps August 24,
1864. Captured and paroled, Athens, Ga. May 8,1865.

The ten companies of the 16th Georgia Volunteers were raised in the counties of
Madison, Elbert, Gwinnett, Habersham, Jackson, and Hart. They were sent to
Richmond, assigned to Cobb's Brigade (Howell Cobb) and encamped until November
1861. The 16th fought in McGruder's Peninsular Campaign; then with McLaws
Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to
Gettysburg; then moved with Longstreet but was not engaged in the fight at
Chickamauga. After serving at Knoxville, the 16th Georgia returned to Virginia
and was involved at The Wilderness and Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor,
Petersburg, Cedar Creek and Saylors Creek. Having sustained heavy casualties,
the 16th surrendered 2 officers and 51 enlisted men at Appomattox Court House.
