Esther/Hester BUTTS was born the 17th of April, 1775, the daughter of Hillary BUTT R.S., who died in 1781 when Esther was only six years old. Esther's siblings included:
• Mary BUTTS (born about 1770, married first by 1788, married secondly about 1805, died after 1850), who was the second wife of William Henry WILDER I, "Harry" (born 1757) - her second husband was William FLAKE (born 1775-1785, died 1825), and
• Sarah BUTTS (born 1770-1780, married 1795 in Effingham County, died betwen 1830 and 1837), who was the first wife of Henry WHITE (born 1770-1780, remarried about 1837, died 1842-1850).

Esther was the wife, first of William THORN(E), and then of Major Lewis LANIER R.S.
