John served in the US Navy aboard the USS Essex as it toured the Mediterranean during the Vietnam War. He worked in the boiler room helping serve steam for the ship's propulsion. He sent many postcards home from around Europe during this adventurous time which are memorialized in family records.
After coming home, he worked for Western Electric and attended HVAC school in Milford, NE. Also during this time, he met Denise Dallaire, married in 1979, and had children Crystal and Matt in 1983 and 1985, respectively. The family spent a lot of time boating on the Missouri River and at The Oaks Food and Spirits, a restaurant that John and Denise owned together. In 1994, John and Denise divorced but John always maintained a close relationship with his children, attending many activities with his children, and taking them to St. Paul's Lutheran Church every Sunday.
In 1997, he grew closer to Karen Israelson who became his loving companion. John and Karen enjoyed much time with their respective children and grandchildren, had many happy events at Piccolo's in Millard, dinners out at Jericho's Restaurant on Dodge St, and many leisure trips to Lake Erie, Mexico, and the Ozarks.
In 2016, John suffered an aortic dissection and spent many weeks and months in recovery and rehab. He was very grateful to the many friends and family around him during this time as they helped him get to a state of health where he could enjoy some truly wonderful years in his later retirement.
In 2019, Karen passed away with John and family by her side. After Karen's passing, grandchildren Zoe, Jack, and Zane became the center of his life and he spent much of his time with them and experienced many "firsts" in their lives.
In the last year of his life, John took several road trips down to the Ozarks to help his son with his new home, and enjoyed a wonderful vacation with him, his son's fiancee Angie, and his daughter Crystal and her family there.
Throughout his life, John was known as a jack of all trades with a wealth of knowledge for fixing anything and everything around the house. When consulting with him about what needed fixing and what tools would be required, he could often be heard remarking in his booming voice, "If I ain't got it, you don't need it!"
John is preceded in death by Carl Ray and Gladys Ahlborg; Karen Israelson. He is survived by daughter Crystal Heath & husband Zach; son Matt Ahlborg & fiance Angela Loregian; grandchildren: Zoe, Jack, Zane; sister Charlene Conway; nieces and nephews of the Wilkins' family: Brett, Ben, Brittany, Brianne, and their respective families; Karen Israelson's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
