Gary Lee Ballard, 74, of Powell, Ohio, formerly of Danville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, at home in Powell, Ohio.

Mr. Ballard was born Sept. 18, 1948, in Danville, the son of Virgil D. and Pearl F. Faulkner Ballard, and attended Danville schools. He graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Eastern Illinois University and the University of Alabama with a master's degree in criminal justice.

While living in Danville, he was a funeral director at Berhalter/Pape Funeral Home, Vermilion County coroner and chief deputy sheriff. While living in Alabama, he was the assistant administrator of a regional juvenile center, administrator of a juvenile boot-camp and wilderness program, and a juvenile probation officer.

In 1985, he moved to St. Clairsville, Ohio, where he was a professor and chair of the criminal justice program at Belmont College until his retirement in 2015.

He always enjoyed sharing stories and jokes with family and friends. He also enjoyed adding to his ever-growing elephants collection, as well as watching his beloved University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team and NASCAR.

Survivors include one son, Robert Andrew (Andy) Ballard of Worthington, Ohio; one daughter, Kimberly (James) Hensler of Bethalto; three grandchildren, Jordan Miller, Akoyia Smith and Ambria Smith; a nephew, Darren (Stephanie) Ballard; a niece, Michelle (Jason) Headley; and an ex-spouse, Lee Ann Smith Ballard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil Dwight Ballard Jr.; and an ex-spouse, Susan "Bireline" Ballard Kinney.
