Her father, Esequiel Cabeza deBaca, was the first Lieutenant Governor after New Mexico was admitted to statehood in 1912. He was elected and became the State's Second Governor on January 1, 1917; and passed away on February 18, 1917. She led a colorful life. She was chosen as sponsor of the battleship USS New Mexico, commissioned April 23, 1917; and participated as honored guest when the ships bell was returned to New Mexico and placed in the Santa Fe Plaza.

She was educated in Las Vegas, NM, spending her early school days in the old Sisters of Loretto School. She later attended New Mexico Normal, now New Mexico Highlands University.

A former school teacher, Margarita rode horseback to teach at a school in San Pablo in a remote area of San Miguel County. She later was a UNESCO teacher in Quito, Ecuador, and Patzcuaro, Mexico. She then taught in the West Las Vegas schools until her retirement in 1956.

She also was the author of a cookbook, New Mexico Dishes.

She was the widow of the late Antonio Jose Martinez, who had died on April 21, 1948. They had married on November 3, 1918, in Del Norte, CO. He was a prominent New Mexico newspaper man, serving for many years as editor of El Nuevo Mexicano, the Spanish edition of The New Mexican.
