Westbrook was first settled 1648 as the Oyster River Quarter of Old Saybrook. Known prev. as Pochoug and West Saybrook. Timber from local white oak and chestnut forests sustained a shipbuilding industry that flourished for nearly a century.
John was a ship captain
He inherited land from his father, half a lot of land with a mansion house in the parish of Chester, and half his lands lying on the west side of the country road. Also all of his homestead with house, land with his barn, land in Ragged Rock meadow, and half the land at the west end of the Rockie Hill; provided John pays the legacies in his father Abraham's will.
