William Robert "Papy" Pettit, 82, a nine-year resident of Yermo, died on June 16, 2001 in Barstow. Pettit was born Sept. 11, 1918 in Okeema, Okla., and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring as a master sergeant. He was a long-time Barstow resident who served as a police officer with the Barstow Police Department for 16 years. Pettit was a former resident of Yucaipa for seven years, a member of Barstow Elks Lodge No. 1920 for 41 years, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 797 in Yermo. He was an adjutant with the American Legion and was the parks commissioner with the community services district. He liked fishing. Pettit is survived by his wife, Marie Pettit of Yermo; daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Robert Moore of Cibola, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sally Parker of Bullhead City, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Valery Parker of Barstow; son and daughter-in-law, David and Debbie Parker of Apple Valley; grandson Daniel Chapman of Madrid, Ind., granddaughter Kalissa Maki of Wolfford Heights, Ca.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
