He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as an aerial photographer and as an Image Interpreter (II) during the Viet Nam War. He was privileged to be one of the first to see satellite photos. He was cited for locating a hidden, underground airport in the mountains of North Korea. While doing his work for the Army, Jerry had a high security designation and had a SR-71 Blackbird and a U2 planes at his disposable. He was rightfully proud to be a veteran and a member of the American Legion. For the past several years Jerry volunteered his time to place flags at the graves of all service veterans.
Jerry grew up in Mayes and Wagoner Counties and always considered this area home. After living in Tulsa, Wagoner, traveling with the service, and living in Claremore, he and Sue returned to make their home in Mayes County in 1975.
He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Wagoner where he served as Elder. He loved to participate in church activities.
Jerry departed this life Friday, August 25, 2017 at his home in Chouteau, OK at the age of 75 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Atchley; his mother, Wava Atchley; brothers, Jimmie Atchley and Roger Atchley; a sister, Wanda Kay Jones and two nieces, Lynette Atchley and Stacy Craven.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Atchley of the home; a son, Les Atchley and his wife, Dawn, of Chouteau, OK; daughter, Ginger Stoezel and husband; stepmother, Virginia Atchley; grandchildren, Mikala, Keeli, Nate and Kameron, and many other "adoptive" grandchildren; his siblings, Barbara Neel, Carol Watson, Susan Butler, Mary Ann Peace, Steven Atchley and Jan Huggins and many, many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
