Johann (John) was born in Rechtenfleth and was baptized in St. Johannis Church on November 4, 1877. His godparents were Hinrich Rohen, Johann Louis Flamme, Maria Katharine Weinrich, and Sophie Adeline Heidorn, all of Rechtenfleth. He arrived in Charleston with his family in 1884. According to his WWI draft card, he was employed as a ship carpenter.

He died from stomach cancer. His death certificate states that he was a clerk. His wife was Bertha J. Douglas.
