Transient Man is Killed When Struck By Auto
No Marks of Identification Found On Body
State Men Called
Fingerprints Prove The Identity of Man
-------
Hugh C. Adams, transient, was killed here Saturday night about nine o'clock when he was struck by an automobile on Highway 2 north of Georgetown about 6 miles.
Mr. D. E. Kelley, of Austin, driving of the machine which struck Mr. Adams, told Sheriff Robert O. Davis, who investigated the accident that he was driving towards Austin and that as he met another automobile, he was blinded by the lights of the approaching machine and did not see the man who was walking along the side of the road.
Mr. Kelley, after the Sheriff's investigation, was dismissed and no charges were filed against him as a result of the accident.
Witnessing the accident were Mr. Standifer Owens and Mr. Atkinson and another man all of Jarrell.
Immediately following the accident, a Davis ambulance was called to take the injured man to the office of Dr. Walter S. Martin for medical treatment. Mr. Adams died in the doctor's office a few minutes after arriving there without ever re-gaining consciousness.
A thorough search of the victim's clothes was made, but no marks of identification could be found by local officials, with the exception of blurred laundry mark on the inside lining of the left coat sleeve.
When Mr. Adams was killed, he was dressed in a blue serge coat, a blue denim jumper, brown kackie trousers, a dark felt hat and heavy work shoes.
Sheriff Davis notified member of the Department of Public Safety of the accident and asked for fingerprint men from the Bureau of Intelligeney to assist him establishing the identify of the dead man.
Shortly after midnight, W. E. Naylor, who as assigned to the case, Leslie Perryman and A. L. Ford, assistant to the chief of the Bureau of Identification took up the investigation of the case, made a complete examination of the clothes of the victim, took fingerprints, and made a number of photographs of the dead man.
Upon their return to Austin, a search of their files was made, and it was found that Mr. Adams had been fingerprinted at Meridian, where a number of his relatives lived. They were immediately notified, and arrived in Georgetown Sunday afternoon to take his body to Meridian for burial.
As Mr. Adams was wearing a hat purchased in the Rio Grande Valley, Sheriff Davis said that he thought that the man had been living there and was making his way back toward Meridian at the time of the accident.
