According to the Morning Star newspaper published in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois, dated August 18 and 19, 1956, John died at the St Francis Hospital in Freeport, Illinois, on Friday, August 17, 1956. At the time of his death, he was living in Apple River, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. The Bartell Funeral Home (now called Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home) in Warren, Illinois, made the arrangements. On Sunday, August 19, 1956, he was buried in Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin.
I strongly believe he is buried here at the Evergreen Cemetery because his son, Calvin Edward Luke, and two siblings, Mildred Oata "Millie" (Luke) Evans and Francis Floyd Luke, are buried here, as well.
John married Minnie Charlotte Harwick on August 10, 1903, in Adams County, Wisconsin. The 1905 Wisconsin state census shows them with two children, Kittie and Calvin. Kittie was born about a year before John and Minnie were married. Interestingly, Calvin was born two months before the wedding. The 1910 census shows John and Minnie with Calvin and Ralph. Kittie had passed away in 1908.
UPDATE: I just learned that Kittie is not John Luke's daughter. Her father is actually Henry Lyman Cook (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/6014906/henry-lyman-cook). Her full name is Kittie Caroline Cook, born on December 18, 1901, in Adams County, Wisconsin.
The 1920 census shows Minnie with second husband Lee Jefferson Kingsley, a widower, living in Delton, Sauk County, Wisconsin. Lee's wife, Mina Minerva Shew, died three weeks after childbirth on June 24, 1905. Minnie and Lee were married on August 27, 1919, in Columbia County, Wisconsin. In that census, John is listed as widowed, living with Calvin in Council Hill, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. In 1921, Minnie and Lee had a son Milton B Kingsley.
