DANVILLE - M. Ralph Campbell, 73, of 2 Primrose Court died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was a resident of Danville for the past 12 years and before that was a lifelong resident of Dornsife.
He was born June 28, 1927, in Red Cross, a son of the late Elijah and Lula May Brown Campbell. His wife of seven years is Kathleen Campbell.
He was educated in the Line. Mountain School District. Elijah and Ralph Campbell established EG Campbell & Son and later branched out into Campbell Luxury Living Homes. Campbell Fabrications Inc. and Campbell Lumber Co. were formed to assist in the construction of approximately 1,000 homes on the east and west shores of Harrisburg as well as other areas of Central Pennsylvania. Ralph Campbell's building career began on Labor Day 1948 and lasted through 1972.
In 1966, he opened Campbell's Chevrolet new-car dealership in Dornsife and opened a second dealership in Shamokin in 1975. In 1973, he purchased a Hertz CarTruck Rental Agency in Williamsport.
Mr. Campbell's banking career began in 1957 and spanned more than 35 years. He was director of Trevorton National Bank, which later merged into Pennsylvania National Bank. In 1959, he joined Market Street National Bank, changing the name to Community National Bank. In 1964, he was named vice president and in 1968 became president and CEO.
He retired from his automobile dealerships in 1982 and devoted his time to the operations of Community National Bank, which was sold to a Philadelphia holding company in 1985. In 1989, along with a group of investors, Mr. Campbell was successful in raising the $4 million required in common stock offerings to pave the way to establish Montour Bank in Danville. When Montour Bank was sold, Mr. Campbell purchased Performance Chevrolet in Sunbury and ran the business until selling it in 2000.
He was the first chairman of the Northumberland County Industrial Authority and was vice chairman of Home Builders of Central Pennsylvania.
He was also a member of the Northumberland County Board of Assistance. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons and one sister, Ida Unger of Elizabethville.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Willie Schwalm, in 1989.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the David J. Brady Funeral Home, 320 Church St.. Danville. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cardiac Department, co Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA 17822.
