Asher Booth Martin Family
From Families of Fisher County (published in 1986)

The Asher B. Martin family was among the pioneer settlers of Fisher County. He was born December 23, 1864 in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Thurmond, was born in Louisiana in 1866. He died August 18, 1953. Her death occurred in 1913. Both are buried in Roby Cemetery.

In the fall of 1906, Asher B. Martin and his sons cut timber from the farm they owned in Cass County, Texas. They carried it to the saw mill where it was made into lumber. This lumber was shipped by train to Sweetwater, Texas. From there it was hauled by wagon twenty-three miles north to the farm that was to be their future home in Sardis-Cross Roads Community.

The family traveled by freight car and passenger coach to Fisher County in January 1907.

Asher B. Martin and his wife had nine living children. Four of these, Robert T, Blanche (Mrs. O H. Hayes), Grady, and Justin, were born in Louisiana before the family moved to Texas. After they moved to Atlanta in Cass County, Texas, four more were born. These were W. Carl, Clyde, Lurline Unnewehr and Alva (Palmer) McHaney. The youngest child, Pelham A, was born in Fisher County.

Asher B. Martin's parents, Rev. Robert Martin and his wife, Indiana (Dillard) Martin, came to Fisher County early in 1886. They returned to Louisiana where Rev. Martin died in 1899. While in Fisher County, he did missionary work over the entire area. The records show that Rev. and Mrs. Martin were charter members of the First Baptist Church in Roby which was organized in 1887.

After the death of Rev. Martin, his wife returned to Fisher County, Texas, and lived with her daughter, Katura (Mrs. S. R. Bryan) until her death, December 9, 1901. She was buried in Roby Cemetery.

The Martin family of Fisher County are descendants of Robert Martin, of Revolutionary War fame. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1747 and migrated to America on the ship "Bounty" which landed in Charleston, S. C, March 3, 1766.

Captain Henry Key, who also served in the Revolutionary War, was the great-grandfather of Mary Elizabeth Thurmond.

W. Carl Martin, Pelham A. Martin and Mrs. Lurline Unnewehr of Roby are the only remaining second cousins to the late Rev. Robert Martin.
