Wilma Blanche (nee Maile) Rushing passed away at the age of 86, at Mercy West Hospital in West Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday, February 2nd surrounded by her loved ones.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023, from 3:00- 5:00 PM at Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was the eighth child born to Charles and Cynthia (Blanche) Garnett Maile on November 11,1936 in Seligman, Missouri. Wilma grew up on a farm in rural Iowa between Scranton and Jefferson and graduated from Scranton Consolidated Schools.

She married Jerry Allen Rushing on February 8, 1957. They were married for 42 years until his death in 1999. Together they raised four kids in Johnston, Iowa. All survived her, Ron (Jeanine) Rushing of Des Moines, Carrie (Scott) Makin of Wabash, Indiana, Terry (Nyle) Rushing of Johnston, Iowa, and Diane (Bobby) Elliott of Waukee, Iowa.

One of her greatest joys of her life was being a grandma to 10 grandkids, great grandma to 13 (with one due in May) and great-great grandma. She is preceded in death by one grandson Joshua Rushing, four brothers and one sister. One sister, Hazel Monthei of Jefferson, Iowa survives.

She loved reading and as a child and was caught reading instead of doing her chores. Rather than play sports or board games she enjoyed reading to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, most recently giving them books for Christmas.

She was generous with her time and resources, giving to family members and others in need, volunteering for many organizations and as a loving foster parent. She was instrumental in bringing congregate meals at Crown Point Senior Center and was a regular volunteer in the office.

She also loved watching Iowa and Iowa State football and basketball and most recently started following the New York Yankees.

Most recently she resided in Independent Living at Meadowview of Johnston just a mile from where she lived for 47 years.
