ELIAZBETH HENCH and JOHN RICE
Elizabeth (Betsy) Hench, eighth child and third daughter of Johannes and Christina Hench, was born probably in 1762 in Chester County. Of her childhood and youth we have no knowledge.
She was the third of the Hench children who married into the Zachariah and Abigail Hartman Rice Family who lived nearby the Hench farm. In 1784 she was married to John Rice, born 1859, the eldest of the Rice children. He was a blacksmith and farmer, who had learned the blacksmithing trade from his father, a widely known mechanic and builder of Chester County.
Elizabeth and John had ten childrens Maria (Polly) (1785 - 1855), Jacob (1786 - 1830), Julianna (Judith) (1788 - 1871), William (1790 - 1872), John (1793 - 1825), Christina (1799 1840), Samuel (1800 - 1836), Jesse (1801 - 1868), Hannah (1804 - 1865), and Elizabeth, who died in youth. The three older children were born in Chester County; the others in the Tuscorora Valley in Juniata County.
When her husband John's mother, Abigail Rice, was taken ill and died in 1790 from the after-effects of typhus fever incurred in nursing sick and wounded soldiers in the Yellow Springs Hospital Elizabeth took charge of the younger Rice children.
When the Rice land and homes were forfeit because of defective title in 1789, Elizabeth and John accompanied Zachariah and his numerous family at the time the move was made in 1790 to Cumberland County to the Tuscorora Valley in an area later in Juniata County. With Elizabeth and John went their three children born in Chester County: Polly, Jacob, and Judith.
John and his family settled in Milford Township, Juniata County, and lived at the east end of the covered bridge over Tuscorora Creek near Port Royal However the deed to their land apparently was not recorded
Like his brother-in-law, John Hench (2), John Rice likewise found it necessary to find means to make a living and likewise to carry his blacksmithing tools and anvil on his back from place to place about the sparsely inhabited settlements near his new home to encourage sufficient patronage to provide him and his family with a meager living.
When John's father died in 1811, John served as administrator for his father's estate. He bought his father's farm for $5,876, paying off the balance of $1,887.34 for the seventeen living Rice children who had inherited the estate.
Elizabeth died in 1826 (February or September), and John, her husband, in 1837.
Both are buried in the Church Hill Turbett Twp. Juniata Co. PA cemetery.
