Cemetery records state she was born in Massachusetts and died at aged 77yrs, 7mos of old age.

Died, at 2:50 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emily Underfanger, on South State street, Mrs. Esther L. Taintor, aged 76 years, 9 months and 3 days. Esther L. Carter was born in Sheffield, Mass., May 10, 1821. She was married to Eli N. Taintor May 22, 1839. They moved to Courtland county, N. Y., where they resided until they moved to Jacksonville, Ill, in the year 1847. They resided in Jacksonville until the year 1852 when they came to Springfield, where, Feb. 15, 1861, her husband died. There were eight children born to them of which there is but one living, a daughter, Mrs. Emily Underfanger, with whom she was living at the time of her death. She was a loyal lady at the time of the civil war. She opened her house and made her home into a hospital, taking her carriage and conveying sick soldiers to her house and nursing them until they were able to join their regiments.
