He was the editor for newspapers such as The Boston Daily Advertiser, The New World, The Daily Atlas, The Mirror, and The Boston Evening Transcript. He wrote the play "Velasco" for British actress, Ellen Tree. He was best friend and mentor to actress and playwright Anna Cora Mowatt. Edgar Allan Poe wrote about Sargent in his "Literati of New York." Sargent wed Elizabeth Weld in 1848. They had no children. He died of throat cancer in 1880.Playwright and actor.

Sargent died in Boston from oral cancer on December 30, 1880.
