John Fern married Mary A. Tipton,, Jan. 14, 1879, in Cass Co., Indiana. She was the daughter of John Tipton and Matilda Fairchild. Her parents, most of her several sisters, and an infant half-brother, all died in the 1860s. Her only survivor was her half-brother, Schuyler Philip Tipton, the informant on her death certificate. John and Mary had no children of their own. They farmed in Cass Co. for many years. After John Fern's death in 1910, Mary resided at the Neal Home in Logansport for several years.
