James Buren Baker always called Buren was one of six children born to "Mr. Willie and Della". Their children were:
May Fern Baker born 12 Sep 1897 and died 1984
Verba Ann Baker born 19 May 1899 and died 22 Jan 1974
Heral Blythe Baker born Feb 1901 and died Aug 1902
James Buren Baker born 17 Apr 1902 and died 22 Aug 1958
Queenie Victoria Baker born 1 Jun 1904 and died 30 May 1988
Janie Corez Baker born 6 Nov 1906 and died 5 Jan 1990

Buren's parents lived in several different places. In 1909 when he was 7 years of age, he attended Kelly School and is shown on the group school picture. About 2 years later he is still at Kelly School, and the last year he is shown is 1917. His parents moved to the Taylor's Store community also in Calloway County some time after 1917. Buren walked about 1/4 mile from his home to attend Paschall School. There he met the pretty girl who was to become his wife on 15 Sep 1922, Jeffie Merl Paschall. During the time Merl and Buren were dating, Buren was able to go to a nearby town, Hazel, to attend high school since Paschall School only carried grades 1 - 8. Merl always said in later years, "all those girls in Hazel wanted Buren, but they didn't get him." She also said that since he was the only son in a family with 4 sisters and a mother they all "spoiled him." Buren always loved baseball and played on a team at Hazel--they all wore homemade uniforms. He loved listening to the St. Louis Cardinal games in later years on the radio and also loved going to basketball games.

Buren and Merl built a two-room home on her parent's farm where their two daughters were born--Freda Gay in 1923 and Milta Malee in 1925. They later added two more rooms to the home.

Buren always enjoyed farming and raising cattle and hogs.
Here is a quote from the local newspaper - "January 13, 1950 Buren Baker of Hazel Route 1 had the top price of $46.00 per hundred weight for 1,628 pounds of tobacco according to the Ledger & Times. An average of $26.00 per hundred weight was reported for the sale of dark fired tobacco on the Murray Market yesterday." Merl always enjoyed going to the field with Buren to work rather than doing housework. Evidently he was the "one and only" for Merl because after his death at only 56 years of age, she lived alone until 2007 and never married again.

(Newspaper article) Buren Baker, 56, died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon while helping a neighbor cut tobacco. His death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Baker has been helping Aubrey Jones cut his tobacco yesterday afternoon, according to friends, and sufffered a heart attack during the time the men had stopped for a rest. He was brought to the Murray General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
