Funeral services were held for William Howard Allpress on Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at 10:00 a.ma at the United Church of Christ in Naper, Nebraska with Tom Harlan officiating.
Casket bearers were Dennis Cline, Josh Sieh, Kevin Neumiller, LaVerne Higgins, Ray Fuhrer, and Loren Sieh. Interment was held at the Spotted Tail Cemetery in Jamison, Nebraska.
Howard was one of nine children born to Henry and Mertie (Kelley) Allpress on the home place southwest of Jamison, Nebraska on April 6, 1907, and he died May 21, 1999 at the Gregory memorial Hospital in Gregory, at the age of 92 years, one month and 15 days.
Mertie died in 1921, and Howard moved down onto the homestead on the Keya Paha River to live with his aunt and uncle, William and Minnie Allpress.
Except for excursions in the 1930’s following grain harvest, looking for work, adventuring through the western states, and taking 4 ½ years off to join the Army, he lived most of his life there on the river.
Howard went through boot camp and cavalry training at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas then on to bases in Phoenix, Arizona and Tacoma, Washington. He finished his tour fighting for 13 months in Europe.
After his brother Glenn passed away in 1985, he moved into Naper at the age of 78. He has lived in Naper for the last 14 years.
Howard is survived by his brother Albert of Naper, Nebraska; his nephews Bob (Nancy) of Bremerton, Washington; Doug (Noel) of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and Paul (Debbie) of Battle Creek, Nebraska; and two great nieces and two great nephews.
Howard was preceded in death by his brothers: Harry Lloyd and Glenn; and his sisters Bertha and Minnie and two infant sisters.
