Charles H. Bacon was born in Vermont, as were both of his parents. He headed west to California to seek his fortune in the gold fields. He appears as a prospector in Toulumne County in the 1860 US Census. He enlisted as a private at Stockton, California, October 16, 1861, and was mustered into Company E, 3rd California Infantry, October 17. Private Bacon was posted to Utah Territory where he was mustered out October 20, 1864. Charles returned to California where he re-enlisted as a sergeant at Mokelumne Hill January 1, 1865, and was mustered into Company H, 8th California Infantry, January 26. Sergeant Bacon was mustered out at Fort Point, San Francisco, California, October 24, 1865. After the war he returned to prospecting in California. He appears in the Inyo County 1869 and 1871 Great Registers as a resident at Lone Pine. He may have been a brother of John Franklin Bacon (born 1833, VT). Charles eventually settled in Arizona, where he appears in the Yavapai County 1876 Great Register. He appears as a miner in the Maztazal mining district of Yavapai County in the 1880 US Census. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Arizona December 20, 1901. He received application No. 1,278,642 and certificate No. 1,045,285. Charles refiled for his pension October 4, 1909. Charles Bacon was never married.
