Fred married Katherine Haupt and they they two daughters, Jeanette and Elizabeth. Following Katherine's sudden death in 1920, he married Lillian Stangor.

Fred A. Rugen, 83, of 18 Circle Drive, Des Plaines, and Clearwater, Florida, formerly of Glenview, died early Tuesday morning in his home. He was pronounced dead at Holy Family Hospital, Des Plaines.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in Glenview United Methodist Church, Glenview. The Rev. Fred Conger officiated. Burial was in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaines.
Mr. Rugen was born May 18, 1890, in Northfield Township, and was a retired partner in Rugen Stores, Inc., in Glenview.
Surviving are his widow, Lillian, nee Stangor; two daughters, Mrs. Jeannette Sangor of Glenview and Mrs. Berry Schutter of Algona, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, Chester and Frank Rugen, and two sisters, Adeline Rugen, also of Glenview, and Mabel Rugen.
William H. Scott Funeral Home, Glenview, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
