Samuel M. Bard was born May 18, 1805 in Fannet Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was raised on the family farm in Black Log Valley. In young life, Samual resided in Black Log Valley approximately 5 miles north of Orbisonia. Samual was a farmer and sometime during the late 1840's the family relocated to Fulton County. The 1840 federal census shows that he was still living in Black Log Valley in Cromwell Township. However, by 1850, he was enumerated in Taylor Township in Fulton County.
After the death of his first wife Mary (Polly) Morgan in the year 1848, he was married a second time to Deborah Ann Black in the year 1849. In 1850, Samuel "Beard" and Deborah were living in Fulton County. His occupation was listed as "farmer." By 1860, however, the family was back in Huntingdon County. This time, they were living in Todd Township. Finally, the 1870 census shows that Samuel "Baird" was living in Clay Township near Three Springs. One important detail about the 1870 census shows that Samuel's parents were both listed as "of foreign birth."
Samual died in Three Springs on February 22, 1879 and is laid to rest in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Maddensville. At least 5 of Samual Bard's sons fought in the Civil War. Both William Harry Bard, and Joshua Bard were soldiers in Company F, 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
Samuel Bard's family remained very close through the decades after his death. In 1954, a newspaper article appeared in print celebrating the fact that "137 Descendants of Samuel Bard Attend Reunion." The article states that it was the "thirtieth annual reunion."
