John Andrew Smith, 70, of Forsyth passed away November 30, 2020 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

A private family memorial service will be held Friday, December 4, 2020 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. A memorial gathering will be 11:00 – 12:00, Friday at the funeral home. Due to current mitigations, crowd size will be limited to 10 at one time, masks will be required and all CDC guidance will be followed. In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's honor may be made to the American Cancer Society, 675 E Linton Ave, Springfield, IL 62703 or PAWS of Jacksonville, 400 W Walnut St, Jacksonville, IL 62650.

John was born August 26, 1950 in Decatur, the son of John Francis and Ida Elizabeth (Elliott) Smith. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy. He married Janice R. Evans on August 16, 2008 in Decatur. She preceded him in death on May 12, 2019. John worked for the City of Decatur for 30 years, serving our community as Director of Water Management and then retiring as Assistant City Manager. John received the Silver Water Drop award for 30 years in the water industry. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his wife, Jan. He also enjoyed model railroads, and skiing.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Frances Smith of Springfield; nephew, Andrew (Debbie) Whitehead of Mt. Auburn; niece, Ashley Whitehead of Kincaid; great-niece, Charleigh Whitehead; stepchildren, Kristen (Ryan) Glaspell of Jackson Township, OH, Justin (Katy) Shorkey of Chicago, Stephanie Miller of Decatur and Jeff Miller of Decatur; and grandchildren, Luke, Jacob and Maddie.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice R. Smith; and 3 brothers, Gary Haddock, Richard Haddock and Thomas Haddock.
