Veteran Sailor Dies In Racine
Capt. M. Gunderson Operated Tugs Here For Many Years
Capt. Mark Gunderson, 62, of 1214 N. Main street, part owner and captain of the fish tug "Langlois" for many years, died this morning in St. Mary's hospital.
Born in Sheboygan, Oct. 18, 1878, Capt. Gunderson became a lake sailor after completing his education and served as wheelsman aboard a government light house tender.
While in this service, Capt. Gunderson earned his papers as a captain. Coming to Racine more than 30 years ago, he obtained employment with William Muntinga on the tug "Harriet M." and later on the "Carrie Mathews".
Part Owner Of Tug
When the "Langlois" was sold in 1915, Capt. Gunderson, John Muntinga and Alfred Gebbhardt purchased it and Capt. Gunderson operated her up to a few years ago, when he gave up sailing.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Gunderson, a daughter, Mrs. Edward Hintzman, both of Racine; a son, Roy Hess, of Pontiac, Mich.; two brothers, Jim Gunderson of Chicago, and Andrew Gunderson of Kohler, Wis., and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be announced later. The body is at the Krug funeral home.
