A graduate of Lutesville High School, Southeast Missouri State College and the University of Missouri School of Medicine, he served two wartime years in the U.S. Public Health Service before returning to the University of Missouri to complete residency training in urology. He practiced medicine 40 years. After a start in southern California, he returned to the Midwest and primarily practiced in Missouri (Joplin and West Plains) and Kansas (Concordia).
A longtime member of First Baptist Church, his Christian faith was central to his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Judith Lee Amyx Ray and his brother Warren Alvin Ray. Survivors include his brother Stephen Louis Ray (Rhonda), his daughters Cynthia Ray Hamady and Laura Meredith Ray Stewart (Jim), his stepsons Lee Freeman (Brenda) and Wes Freeman (Heather), 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
