James Murphy arrived in Nova Scotia on 10 October 1778 on the ship 'Fame.' Also aboard the ship was his brother John. The ship ran aground in 1779 and the brothers remained in Nova Scotia where they became fixtures and married sisters Mercy and Chloe Horton.

Many of James's children's records can be found with the Catholic Church in Yarmouth where his name was listed as Jacques since it was a French-speaking church. They are available via the Nova Scotia Archives website. James is most likely buried at Ste. Anne's as it was the only Catholic Church in the vicinity until a few years after his death.

Children include:
James jr.
William
John
Mary (Polly)
Eliza
Elsa
Benjamin
Melzar
Joseph
Martin
Sarah (Sally)
Thomas

James died on 7 October 1833 after a short illness at the age of 77. His obituary is found in the Yarmouth Herald in the 11 October 1833 edition. His Will lists six sons and four daughters since James Jr. and Thomas died prior to its signing.

James' wife, Chloe Horton, converted to the local Zionist faith six months after James death and is buried in Brooklyn Cemetery rather than being entombed with him. He is listed on her marker as her husband, but dates are not listed, indicating a separate location.
