AUGUST 25, 1948 – JANUARY 5, 2023

Calvin "Mark" Taylor Sr., 74, of Old Hickory, TN passed away peacefully on January 5, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born August 25, 1948 to the late Robert A "Tut" and Lee (Blount) Taylor. Mark is proceeded in death by his parents Tut and Lee Taylor, sisters Linda Taylor and Barbara Taylor and a granddaughter Skylar Smith.

Mark is survived by his wife of 37 years, Valerie Jordan-Taylor and his children, Mark (Toni) Taylor, Stefanie (Chuck) Todd, Candyce (Matt) Taylor, Ryan (Laurna) Taylor, Travis (Rima) Taylor, and Jourdan (John) Young, 10 Grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 very special pets, Bailey and Harley. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Robert, David and Lester as well as 2 sisters, Shirley and LouEllen.

Mark's education was in Engineering but his love and passion was in building stringed musical instruments.

Mark's father Tut Taylor opened the Old Time Pickin' Parlor on 2nd Avenue in mid-1972 where Mark worked closely with him. After the Pickin' Parlor, Mark and his dad formed Tennessee Dulcimer Works. After his father bought Grammar Guitars, Mark and his dad founded Tut Taylor Music in the 70's.

In 1974 Mark was commissioned by the state of Tennessee to handcraft a dulcimer to be presented to the First Lady Pat Nixon on her 62nd birthday. That was only the beginning of Mark's acquaintance with celebrities too numerous to count. A list of musicians, for whom he has either done custom work or built an instrument for, spans musical genres from Rock to Pop to Country. Some of his clients have included Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Charlie Daniels, Johnny Cash, Keith Richards, Elvis Presley, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, and Alan Jackson. He set up his own business, Crafters of TN, from which he became very well known. In 1993 he formed Rich and Taylor along with Greg Rich. In 1996 Rich and Taylor was dissolved and Mark reverted back to the name Crafters of TN. Then in November 2000 Mark reopened the Pickin' Parlor 4 doors down from the original location. In 2010 he semi-retired and only built instruments by special order and/or request. Due to failing health Mark fully retired in late 2019. During the last years of his life his Granddaughter, Laila Young, who was his best friend, kept him young at heart.

There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends for Calvin on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hermitage Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, 535 Shute Ln, Old Hickory, TN 37138.
