Cyclist Dies 9 Months After Crash.
Robert Edward Bates, 43, who has been in a coma since his motorcycle and a car collided
at 12th and Chestnut 21 April died yesterday at a nursing home at 904 E. 68th.
Bates, of 4901 Colorado was west bond on 12th about 4:15 p.m. April 21, when his motorcycle and a car driven north on chestnut by Renaldo Perez, of 1306 Winchester,
Collided Police said. Bates was thrown 110 feet upon impact. He did not regain consciousness after the accident and was transferred from Veterans Hospital to the nursing home in July. His wife, Mrs. Helen M. Bates of the homes was a passenger
on the motorcycle and was hospitalized several times for injuries suffered in the accident. He was born in Mosby in Clay County, was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Bates was a truck driver for the Botsford Ready-mix Concrete Company 10 years. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Bowman . Killeen, Texas and Mrs. Roberta Austin, 5305 E. 49th; his Mother, Mrs. Goldie Bates, 110 Ewing; a brother, James R. Bates, Kansas City; a sister Mrs. Janice Willoughby, Lee Summit, and three grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Passantino Chapel; Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Chapel.
