NORTH VERNON --- Ruth Janet Skelton, 60, of North Vernon died at 11 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 25, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. Skelton retired in 1982 as an attendant and secretary at Muscatatuck State Developmental Center. She was a graduate of Vernon High School and worked as a typesetter for the North Vernon Plain Dealer and Sun.

Mrs. Skelton was a member of the Jennings County Historical Society, member and past president of Vernon Clionion Society, and president of Jennings County Preservation Society. As a member of the preservation society, she was involved in restoring and moving Walnut Grove School to Muscatatuck County Park. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, American Veterans, and Moose and Eagles Lodges, all of North Vernon. She enjoyed Civil War re-enactment and was a member of the Indiana 49th Cavalry. She attended New Freedom Baptist Church in Jennings County.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Cardinal officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Jennings County Preservation Society.

Mrs. Skelton was born in North Vernon July 2, 1941, the daughter of Louis Carl Gearries, Sr. and Mary Hazel Gearries. She married Melvin Lee Skelton. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Melvin Lee Skelton, Jr. and Kirk Arthur, both of North Vernon; a daughter, Brenda Howard of Tampa, Fla.; stepsons, Roger Skelton of Scottsburg and Robbie Skelton of North Vernon; stepdaughters, Nancy Clolinger of Charlestown, Miss., and Pam Terrell of San Antonio, Texas; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis Carl Gearries, Jr. of Commiskey; and sisters, Mary Lou Richardson of Fort Myers, Fla., Martha Eden, Starlene Ross and Julie Gearries, all of North Vernon, and Donna Lunsford of Madison; and a companion, James Everage of North Vernon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kyle Arthur; and brothers, Robert Earl and Chester Eugene Gearries.
