Catherine "Kate" (Phares) Phares (1825-1874) was born in Pendleton County, Virginia (now West Virginia), the fourth oldest of Robert Phares (1795-1974) and Martha Susan" Wimer) Phares (1800-1870), Kate married her first cousin, Noah D. Phares (1822-1893) in 1846. The couple migrated through Tipton County, Indiana; Kankakee County, Illinois; Bates County, Missouri.

In 1869 the family migrated to Cherry Township, rural Montgomery Co., KS. They were part of a group known as the "1869 Pioneers", who came to homestead on Osage Ceded Land. Noah and Kate's property was 2 miles north of Cherryvale on what is now 2598 US Hwy 169, Cherryvale, KS 67335.

The 160-acre homestead had paperwork on it in 1872. The requirements for homesteading (living on the land, a home, and improving the land) were met in 1877, and the final paperwork was put in 1882.

The couple had five children. All lived to adulthood, but only one, the youngest, Victoria (Phares) Huffman (1864-1934), lived past 1880. It is thought only Victoria had children of her own, but it is not thought her children had issue. Therefore, no descendants are alive today from this line.

Children:
1. Elizabeth (Phares) Bouton (1848-1875), married in 1867 to Noah Bouton (1849-1934)
2. Robert Phares (abt 1851-1874)
3. Susan "Mary" (Phares) Rowe (abt 1851-bet 1877-80), married in 1877 to John Rowe (1842-?)
4. Reuhanna (Phares) Mullennax (abt 1853-1873), married in 1870 to George Mullennax (1845-1912)
5. Victoria (Phares) Huffman (1864-1934), married in 1878 to John Huffman (1856-1931)

The family settled in Cherry Township in 1869 and hopeful prosperity to the family, but the 1870s were taken up with five deaths in the family:

1. Reuhanna (Phares) Phares (1853-1873), age 20.

2. Robert Phares (abt 1851-1874), age about 23, was thrown from a wagon with serious injuries. For several days he had a fever and, then, died.

*3. Kate (Phares) Phares (1825-1874), the matriarch, age 49, died nine days after her son. The newspaper stated her son's "sickness and death so affected his mother" that she got a fever, too, and died the following Sunday.

4. Elizabeth (Phares) Bouton (1848-1875), age abt 27. The cause of death is not known. The couple had been married for 7-1/2 years with no issue, but one wonders when a young married woman dies, if it was from childbirth complications.

5. Susan (Phares) Rowe (abt 1851-bet 1877-1880), age abt 26-29. The couple married in 1877. The cause of death is not known, but when a young married woman dies, one wonders if it was from childbirth complications.

Surviving from the family were Noah D. Phares (1822-1893), patriarch, and Victoria (Phares) Huffman (1864-1934), youngest child, ages abt 59 and 18 in 1880. Victoria and her husband, John Huffman (1852-1931) lived with Noah on the 1880 Federal census.
