WIFE OF DUNCAN, VERNON
2LT US ARMY

Emma Simpson Duncan, 99, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on December 26, 2022. At 99, Emma outlived most of her family and friends, but as a woman who never met a stranger and would do anything for anyone, what a celebration there will be when she joins them all in Heaven! She had a generous, caring heart and lived a rich and fulfilled life. A guiding example of what a Christian should be, her strong faith guided her through her life journey.

The family and friends that have predeceased her could probably fill a football stadium. Emma is predeceased by Vernon, her husband of 73 years and lifelong travel and adventure partner (oh, the stories they could tell!); her oldest son Bill (Vernon William), daughter-in-law, Penelope; parents Olof and Beulah; brothers Olof (Millie), Roscoe (Evelyn), Jimmy (Francis), Ira (Mary), and John (Ilsa); sisters Mary (Lewis) and Norma (Hugh); her in-laws James and Sarah; five brothers-in-law and their wives; and four sisters-in-law and their husbands.

There are also many she left behind. She is survived by her children Mary Anne (Dale), John (Ellen), Steve (Bonnie), and Kathleen (Jimmie); daughter-in-law Ann (Bill's wife); sister-in-law Gladys; 14 grandchildren John S. (Ashley), Jim S., Tom (Rose), Aimee, Sarah (Adam), Lisa (Bruce), John D. (Sarah), Joshua, Eric (Whitney), James, Catherine (Jonathan), Jim R., Suzanne (Nathan), and Duncan (Rachel); 8 great grandchildren Emily (Alex), John, Michael, Maci, Aubrey, Jacob, Shawmee, and Sayward; 2 great-great grandchildren Ethan and Sophie, and a vast extended family.

Emma's top priorities were faith and family. She was a firm believer in the power of prayer. Her rosary was never far from her hand and she loved giving rosaries away, especially glow-in-the-dark ones to children. She is a true example of sharing your time, talent, and treasure. Emma was most proud of her service as a nurse cadet at St. Joseph's School of Nursing while Vernon was fighting in WWII. They were prime examples of The Greatest Generation, believing strongly in hard work, self-sacrifice, and love of country.

Emma met Vernon in Illinois when she served him ice cream at her job with Coppin's Dairy, across the street from the National Tea Grocery store he managed, and from there they began their great adventure. Vernon admired Emma's sparkling, industrious spirit which she carried with her across the United States during his Army service and State Farm career. Emma happily put down roots, found jobs, and organized communities and resources wherever she was needed. Emma's favorite job was pediatric nursing and most unique job was helping at a dairy farm in Oregon. She was active in many organizations such as the Bishop Kenny High School guild/auxiliary and American Business Woman's Association. Emma and Vernon were founding members of Christ the King Church. She was also a devoted member of the Catholic Women's Club and a charter member of St. Anthony's Circle. She enjoyed her women's Rainbow Investment Club, bridge, oil painting, swimming, golf, baking, and sewing. Emma is best known for remembering everyone's birthday and being a firm believer in the value of writing letters.

The Family would like to thank her devoted and loving caregivers, Aimee, Eartha, Eveline, Gloria and the family care team as well as Allene, with Vitas Hospice. Their kindness, compassion and comfort were such a blessing.

There is a huge Bridge party taking place in Heaven today. In true Irish fashion, Emma leaves us with unending friendship, loyalty, and love. We have been blessed by how she touched each of our lives, and she prays that our tears will be replaced by smiles and all our prayers will be answered.

Service Information: A viewing will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 at Christ the King on January 3rd. A rosary at Christ The King will be held at 3:30 pm on January 3rd. A Mass will be held at 4 pm on January 3rd. A burial will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 10:00 Am on January 4th. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to Christ The King Catholic School and Church.
