James Charles Howell, the son of George M. Howell and Elva J. Pegg Howell, was born August 31, 1912 at the family farm near Eunice. Jimmy left his earthly home and went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 15, 2008 at the Mountain View Healthcare, making his age 95 years, 5 months and 14 days.
Jimmy served in the United States Army from January 22, 1943 to July 14, 1945. While serving in World War II, he served in England, then Normandy, France through Europe to Italy then across to Africa. While serving, he earned a Bronze Star.
After serving in World War II, he married Lorraine Mendenhall; they later divorced. He then moved to Tennessee and married Juanita, and worked for the State of Tennessee as a security guard for a State Facility. While working in Tennessee, he bought 80 acres in the home area of Eunice, building a house, barns and so forth. When he retired, he moved to his acreage. He married Mabel Baney in 1974. He and Mabel enjoyed living on the farm.
In August 2001, Uncle Jim was sent to the VA Hospital in Poplar Bluff and upon discharge from there he moved to live with his niece, Alice. He stayed with Bill and Alice until after Bill's surgery in 2003. After that, when Alice was no longer available to help with his care, things became more confusing and after several moves, he moved back to his farm with Mabel. He attended Eunice Baptist Church as long as health would allow. While living with Bill and Alice, he attended Cabool General Baptist Church. After Mabel's death, Jimmy moved several times and lived in Summersville Senior Housing. When he could no longer live alone, even with help, he moved to Mountain View Healthcare.
Preceding Jimmy in death are his parents, George and Elva; his two sisters, Bessie Van Deusen, and Hester Culler; two nephews, George Reed and wife, Lovita, and Billy Van Deusen.
Surviving are his nieces, Alice Mann and husband, William (Bill), and family of Mountain Grove, MO; Margaret Garrett and husband, Keith, and family of Dixon, MO; Kathy Fees and family of Eunice, MO; Robin Ringstad Aurbach and husband, Ed, and family of Stockton, California; great nieces, Tonya Smith and husband, Chad, and family of Summersville, MO; Billy Jo Kirn and family of Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and a very dear and special cousin, Aileene Sikirica, of the State of Florida. Uncle Jim will be missed and be remembered by his relatives, many friends and neighbors.
Services were held on Monday, February 18, 2008 at 2:00 at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel in Summersville with Rev. Brad Wallace officiating.
Interment was in Bethel Cemetery with full Military honors, under the care of Bradford Funeral Home of Summersville, MO.
