Professional baseball player. He caught and played first base for clubs in the pre-Negro leagues and Negro leagues from 1914 to 1927. Gatewood began his career in 1914 playing for both the Schenectady Mohawk Giants and Philadelphia Giants. He then joined the New York Lincoln Giants and Brooklyn Royal Giants in 1916, and played for Brooklyn again from 1917 to 1921. In between, Gatewood served in World War I and played with the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants in 1919 and 1921, before moving back to the New York Lincoln Giants in 1922. In 1924, Gatewood rejoined the Bacharach Giants in the Eastern Colored League, remaining with the major league club through 1927, helping the club to the ECL pennant in 1926 and 1927 as a backup to starting catcher Willie Jones. In 100 documented major league games, he totaled 66 hits and 31 runs batted in in 296 at-bats, a .223 batting average, with playing in 215 documented games across all levels of professional black baseball.
