Young Edward contracted Cholera, as several members of his family had done, while residing at a location known as Summer Quarters.

His older brother, Thomas Eldridge, had died the 3rd of August, his sister, Hannah Elizabeth, the 10th of August, and his father had died the 19th.

After Edward Jr.'s death in September, his mother was a widow with 4 surviving youngsters, her four older daughters having already married. Mother, Hannah Elizabeth then also died 3 December of the same year, and the children were left in charge of a 16 year old brother.

Before leaving for the Salt lake Valley, their oldest sister, Sarah Ann Fuller Gully, took them into her family, raising them until they were self sufficient. They all settled in Utah.
