Richard Eugene "Dick" Fields passed away Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at home in Hiawassee, Towns County, Georgia.

Born July 23, 1923, in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, he was a son of the late Jasper Boaz Fields and Lula Jane Elizabeth Howard.

On November 25, 1951, Dick married Flora Lee "Flo" Alexander, now deceased.

Dick and Flo were former members of the First United Methodist church, Bethany United Methodist Church, and Collins Memorial United Methodist, all of Atlanta. In 1982 Dick retired, ending a 33-year career with Rich's, and they moved to Hiawassee full time and they became members of Hiawassee United Methodist Church.

Although they had no children of their own, in each church they were involved with youth groups. They were long time supporters of former pastors, staying in touch with them after retirement and being sure they had sufficient funds to care for their needs.

In 1969, Dick and Flo built a second home in Hiawassee on Twin Mountain. They spent vacations and weekends in Hiawassee. This became a gathering place for many friends on holidays and other occasions. Dick and Flo had a saying, "If it is not worth sharing, it is not worth having." They were generous to friends sharing their home and love with many throughout the years.

Dick and Flo's involvement in Hiawasee United Methodist Church led to the expansion of the church building in downtown Hiawassee, then to building a new parsonage for the pastor, and later to the purchase of property for the new church building on Highway 76.

Dick was President and Treasurer of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He also held several offices in United Methodist Men and was a life member. He looked forward to the North Georgia Annual conference United Methodist Men's Retreat at Rock Eagle each fall and attended each one as long as his health permitted.

Dick was a long time member of Town County Lions Club and loved working at the Georgia Mountain Fair and the music festivals.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 12 brother and sisters. There are no immediate survivors.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 11, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Hiawassee United Methodist Church with Reverends James Blair and Albert Askew officiating.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations may be made to HUMC Building Fund, Hiawassee United Methodist Church.
