A PUSEYITE FUNERAL IN DEVONPORT. — On Saturday the inhabitants of Devonport, in the neighbourhood of Monument and James's-streets, were somewhat surprised to behold about thirty choristers of St. James's and St. Mary's Church, of all ages and sizes, walking in procession with their white surplices on their arms. It appeared that a young man about 17 years of age, named Warn, son of a smith in the Devonport dockyard, residing in Monument-street, and who was a pupil teacher of St. Mary's schools, and a chorister of St. Mary's Church, died a few days since, after a long illness. Saturday afternoon he was interred in the cemetery. Shortly after 1 o'clock his mortal remains were removed from his late residence, followed by the mourners, several Puseyite clergymen, Dean Swift, the man Friday of St. Mary's, and about thirty choristers, and followed by a multitude of people, who were, no doubt, attracted by the novelty of the procession, proceeded to St. Mary's Church, where the funeral service was chanted, after which the procession re-formed, and wended its way to the cemetery, still followed by a large number of people. On arriving at the cemetery the coffin was taken to the grave, and the service, which is usually read, was chanted by the choristers. The procession was then again re-formed, and returned to the place from whence it started. | The Hampshire Advertiser, October 26, 1861; the Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915; and the 1851 and 1861 censuses.
