Neiman Marcus Legend Dies at 99.5

SAM FAGIN, longtime Dallas resident passed on September 1 in San Antonio, Texas at 99.5 Born in Oklahoma City, the youngest of three brothers and one sister. The proud graduate of Forest Avenue High School, where he met the love of his life, FREDA BARSHOP. Married 67 years. FREDA and SAM were married before he was drafted into the Air Force. He served active duty in World War II in the South Pacific in New Caledonia. He returned from the war very ill nearly died from a disease he contracted in the jungle.

He went to work for Neiman-Marcus as a messenger in the post depression days for $50.00 a month. He reported to Herbert Marcus, Sr., that he was going to be married and he needed to earn more and leaving for Zales. Mr. Marcus instructed "Sammy" not to leave that day until he spoke with him. Later that day SAM received a call from the Manager of the ladies fine shoes. He was promoted from stock boy to salesman in the ladies shoe salon. That was the beginning of a 54 year career with Neiman Marcus. SAM FAGIN became a legend at Neiman-Marcus. He became the top salesman in all of the Neiman Marcus stores. He had customers such as The Duchess of Windsor, Lady Bird Johnson, Mrs. Gerber, Mrs. Firestone, even sold to Ginger Rogers and John Wayne and many others who depended upon SAM not only for the right style but the perfect fit. After retirement from selling shoes, Stanley Marcus named him as salesman emeritus. He traveled all over the United States to help open up the new Neiman Marcus Stores with FREDA. His clientel books were the envy of all, each, several hundred pages, with the names of all customers, selections sold, sizes and other preferences. He, and FREDA, attended all of the galas that preceded the opening of each new Neiman-Marcus Store.

After retirement SAM went on to become a valued volunteer at the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Dallas for 22 years. Working, where else but in the gift shop. SAM and FREDA lived over 18 years in the CLASSIC Independent Living. SAM became the in house Rabbi Emeritus conducting Friday Night Services for all Jewish Residents. He loved his little dog Missy. His son secretly sent Missy to him on an airplane from San Antonio. SAM thought he was going to pick up a package and instead found a live dog. SAM and FREDA were so proud of and loved that dog. The second day he had the dog, he went to pick up the newspaper and he noticed that little dog was following him. That dog became inseparable from SAM and Freda for over 18 years. He was an avid sports fan. Cowboys, Mavericks and Texas Rangers. He watched all Texas Rangers games almost until the day before he passed. He enjoyed college sports. Knew names of all players.

After becoming ill earlier this year, he moved to San Antonio to be close to his son. We thank the doctors and nurses at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, San Antonio that cared for SAM in the last days of his life. SAM was a life long member of Temple Emanu-El, Jewish Federation, Hella Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite Mason, Blue Lodge and Society For Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He is survived by his son LIVING and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at Temple Emanu-el, 8500 Hillcrest , Dallas, Texas with Rabbi Debra Robbins Officiating, Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 2:00 o'clock p.m. Burial will follow in the Temple Emanu-el Cemetery in Dallas.
