Daughter of Byron W. Alden and Anna Ellen Driscoll, they married in Oakland in Oct. 1878.

Oakland, July 31- The body of James G. Alden, 18 year old clerk who resided with his parents in Emeryville, at the corner of Green and Dalton Streets, lies at the morgue. The youth, after spending an evening with convivial friends, retired to his room late last night, drank the contents of a two ounce bottle containing carbolic acid and died before medical assistance reached him. Mrs. Alice Alden, his mother, was brought to his beside and on bended knees with her arms wrapped around him, implored the boy to tell her the reason for his act.

"Mother" said the dying youth, "I do not know who I took the poison. I had no reason." These were the last words spoken by the boy as he lay in pain on the bed. His soul, with its secret intact, passed into eternity, while he was held in the arms of his mother. Dr. M. Woods arrived but the powerful fluid had done its work and there was no chance of aiding the young clerk.

The boy's father, Byron Alden, who is postmaster of Emeryville, and his mother was called. The explanation offered by friends of the youth is that Walter Cushing , Alden's boon companion, had committed suicide 6 weeks ago in the same room by drinking acid. *Source-The San Francisco Examiner, 01 Aug 1905, Tue · Page 1
