His 1897 marriage certificate and an 1899 newspaper article also corroborate his approximate birth year as 1873. The circumstances of his birth were unconventional for the time. His father Andrew Jackson Barefoot, Sr. was married to Zilpha (Barnes) Barefoot. He and his wife were living apart at the time of the 1870 census. Andrew Jackson Barefoot, Sr. was enumerated with Margaret E. Barnes and three of her children, all of whom bore the Barnes surname. It was this "second" family of Andrew Jackson Barefoot, Sr. into which Andrew Jackson "Jack" Barefoot was born. His Barnes surname at birth was later changed to Barefoot. Jack had two short-lived marriages occurring in 1897 and 1903. He married his third wife, Nolia Pittman, about 1908. They were the parents of seven known children: Claudia Mae, Paul, Edward, Fannie Lee, Ruby, Elizabeth "Lizzie" and Johnnie Ed.
