Simon Lewis "L." Beattie was the son of Catharine nee Miller and William Beattie. Not to be confused with his cousin, Simon Beattie 1834-1865 who was the son of John and Agnes Swan Beattie.

1850 Census: Peach Bottom Township, York Co., Pa. taken on 11 December 1850, pg. 23 of 36 in images.
Catharine Beattie: Head of household, b. 1817 age 33. [ Note..husband William Beattie died in 1848]
SIMON L BEATTIE: b. 1836, age 14.
James A. Beattie, b. 1838, age 12.
William W. Beattie Jr. b. 1840 age 10.
Agnes A. Beattie b. 1841, age 9., Agnes is noted in probate records as "alias Nancy Beattie"
Susan P. Beattie b. 1845, age 5.
Walter Beattie b. 1847, age 3.

When Simon Lewis Beattie's father, William Beattie Sr. died in 1848 he died without a will. Probate and the Administration of his estate, and Application or Petition for Guardianship of his and Catharine's children and release of each child as they came of age, went on till 1898 when Simon's mother, Catharine nee Miller now married to John A. Barnett died. William Beattie Sr. owned about 30 acres and it was sold, as were the farm the Beatties lived in and the household and farm implements.
On June 16th 1898, William W. Beattie Jr., son of William Sr. and Catharine, filled out forms of Affidavit of Death at the Register of Wills and took on the administration for the estates of his three deceased brothers, Simon L., Walter, and James Andrew Beattie, giving all three the INCORRECT date of death for them. It was the residue of their father and mothers real estate that William Jr. took to administering. In 1898 when William Jr. gave the dates of death for his brothers, it was 33 yrs from when brother, Walter had died and 16 yrs. from when brothers, James A. and Simon L. Beattie had died.

Walter Beattie, died 9 June 1865, Brother William listed his death as Nov. 1865, pretty close.

James Andrew Beattie, died 17 Sept 1882 in Charleston, S.C.. He has a Charleston, S.Carolina Death Certificate. Brother William wrote July 1884 in Charleston, S.C.

Simon L. Beattie, Died 29 September 1882 in Washington D.C. He has a District of Columbia death certificate. See attached photocopy
Brother William listed his death as August 1888.

Thus the conflicting dates of death from a faulty memory of a family member now circulate as family legal tender in the York County Courthouse and Historical records.
