During the Civil War, James was a 2nd Lt. in Co. I, 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Records of the War Dept. show he was mustered into service in Capt. Child's Company at Camp Lewis, Evansille, IN on Aug 20, 1862. James was honorably discharged in Knoxville, TN on Oct. 1, 1863. He was discharged honorably because of rheumatism and chronic diarrhea which was brought on by his walk to Knoxville, TN and through the marshes and such.
In the spring of 1880, the family moved to Sceyene, Dallas Co., Texas. James died in Kleberg, TX on 05/11/1898 and Sarah died there on Jan 15, 1909
