Bettie, the wife of Robert McElroy, was burned almost beyond recognition when she attempted to start a fire with coal oil at her home near Ovilla, and the can exploded. Although her husband was at home at the time, he did not discover her in time to extinguish the flames and save her life.
Her burial was attended by the largest crowd ever assembled at Ovilla Cemetery up to that time.
She was survived by her husband and 4 small children.
