South Hutchinson – Peggy E. Laster, 79, died Sept. 4, 2006, at Hospice House.
She was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Hutchinson, the daughter of William Albert and Nina Viva Lord O'Connell. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1945 and Hutchinson JUCO in 1947. A lifetime Hutchinson-area resident, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell and then was a baker for Hutchinson Community College, until retiring in 1996.
She was lifetime Hutchinson Community College Alumni and Friends Association Member. She Received the Artillery Order of Molly Pitcher Award, presented by Col. Joseph Wolfenberger of the Kansas National Guard on Dec. 7, 1964.
On June 25, 1949, she married Ralph W. Laster sr. He died April 4, 1976.
Survivors include: a son, Ralph Jr., and wife, Jerri, Lee's Summit, Mo.; a daughter, Kristi Laster, Skiatook, Okla.; a brother; Wilson O'Connell and wife, Dorothy, Boston; a sister-in-law, Dorothy O'Connell, Great Bend; two grandchildren, Damian Laster and wife, Tanya, and Tarissa Helms and husband, Steve; six great-grandchildren; a goddaughter; Jeannette Walters, Skiatook, Okla.; and extended family, Kathleen and Kristopher Keffer; Cassie, Steve, Jay and Amy Smith, all of South Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl O'Connell; and a sister; Nina Mae O'Connell.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Partridge Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Conard presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be sent to the American Kidney Foundation or to Hospice of Reno County, both in care of the funeral home.
